Nocton Cricket Club - Match Report

Match Report - Sunday 31st May 2015

Rustons (69 - 4) beat Nocton (68 all out)

Nocton headed to Rustons for a cup match, still looking for their first win of the season, after defeats against Woodhall Spa, Bracebridge Heath and Horncastle.

A Rustons win would book their place in the cup final. They were therefore very eager for the match to go ahead, despite the damp start to the day.

Nocton had their typical crisis Sunday morning, losing two players and gaining one, and were able to field a team of only eight men.

Rustons won an important toss on a damp wicket and chose to bowl. Nocton openers Matthew Stephens and Mikey Atkinson made a careful start, before Atkinson was dismissed in the sixth over. This brought Dylan Garfoot to the crease. Garfoot was just getting into his stride when Stephens was dismissed in the fourteenth over with the score on 35. This brought a flurry of wickets, and despite some lusty blows from Garfoot, who eventually fell for 42 (seven fours, one six), the team were dismissed in the 22nd over for only 68.

When Nocton came to bowl, captain Stephens was forced to keep wicket due to the player shortage. Garfoot and Miles Lynch opened the bowling, and Garfoot took a wicket in the first over, leg before wicket.

The second wicket pair played positively for the home side, as they chased the low target. Nocton did take a further three wickets, Garfoot finishing with three for 27 from his seven overs, and Atkinson finishing with one for three from his three overs. Rustons reached their target in the 20th over for the loss of four wickets.

The result eliminated Nocton from the Premier Trophy, although they do have a further cup match the following Sunday (7th June) as they head to Billingborough.

The game, as has been the case all season, was very much a battle with a lack of players frustrating those in the team. Hopefully there are some new players waiting to join us on the horizon, so we can really get stuck in to the season and record some wins.
